An uproar in south africa
Its really a festive season for south Africa ,not only south Africa but the whole of Africa is celebrating it. The 2010 world cup has just begun, first of its kind in the African continent. An estimated figure of 84,000 people witnessed the saga which created a new South African history. The starting up was truly with an African touch. Following a magnificent opening ceremony which showcased the music and culture of African people. Before the first game got going the south African president Jacob Zuma addressed the whole crowd who carried a message from former south African president Nelson Mandela who tragically lost his great granddaughter last night. “let me convey a message from medeba our icon who wanted to come and meet us but his family was hit by a tragedy. He said "the game must start and you must enjoy". After years of preparation, discussion and waiting the 2010 world cup has kick started. But what I m digging here is not about the opening or about the matches but what lead to the great game to South Africa. The news was just like trigger when the winning bid was announced by FIFA president Sepp Blatter at a media conference on 15 may 2004.
Africa chosen as a host for 2010 world cup as part of short lived policy to rotate the events in among football confederations . The selection of host countries for the football world cup has changed over time. For all the world cup between 1930 and 1998 the hosting write alternated between Europe, south American and north America it was not until 2002 when the tournament was held in Asia, then world cup was held outside of these three continent s. the first world cup bidding process under continental rotation was 2010 world cup, in which FIFA accepted bids from five African nations. Egypt, South Africa, Libya/Tunisia and morocco were the bidding nations. During that eve following the FIFA executive councils new regulation, not to allow co hosted tournament Tunisia withdrew from the bidding process giving a fare and good chance for south Africa. And later FIFA taken the decision not to consider Libya s bid as its not met any of the regulations of official list of requirements. from that day onwards everyone was certain that south Africa will be the host for 2010 world cup and it came true when the announcement came out making it the first world cup held in Africa. It's the largest sporting event ever played in that continent as the Olympics has yet to visit there.
