USA held England 1-1 after Green gifted an equalizer
In Group C of FIFA World Cup 2010, USA played against England on Saturday with England dominating the game right from the beginning. It was a much hyped match and turned out to be equally so. In the 4th minute, England captain Steven Gerrard left no chance for United States goalkeeper Tim Howard with a low shot from 10 meters after receiving an angled pass from Emile Heskey. All seemed set for England but instead of taking control, they played a different game.
After an initial shaky start, USA was in full action with Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey possessing the ball most of the time. Though there were many shots from both the sides but were saved by the respective defense every time. England goalkeeper Robert Green saved a low shot of Donovan and Jozy Altidore could not convert after getting a nice pass from Donovan. And then came the disappointing moment for England when Green could not stop an ordinary shot from Dempsey after the 40th minute and ball slipped off his hand to goal.
The second half saw a more defensive game from both the sides. The efforts of England manager Capello to replace King who missed a good chance did not help at all. England had to battle against the charged USA and the final score remained leveled at 1-1 with game ending in a draw.
