Fast and Entertaining Water Polo Olympic Events
Introduced in 1900, Water Polo event is held for both men and women in present Olympics, the only difference being the length of the pool that is 30m for men and 25m for women. Total of 12 teams participate in Men event and 8 teams in Women event. Teams are selected based on performance in qualifying tournaments before Olympics while winner of previous Olympics is admitted by default.
There are total of 13 players in each side out of which, seven players remain in pool that includes a goalkeeper and six are used as substitutes. Game involves teamwork, swimming skills and eye-hand coordination. Game is played for 4 periods of 7 minutes each. Aim is to score as many goals as possible. Whoever scores the more goals is declared winner. In tie-break situation, extra two halves of 3 minutes each are allowed and if still there is no result, penalty shootout decides the winner.
In Men event, 12 teams are split into two groups of six teams each who play in round robin format. Top 4 teams of both groups enter quarterfinals after which it is elimination stage. Winners enter semifinals and winners of semifinals enter finals. In Women event, all the 8 teams play in round robin format against each other and top four teams in standings enter semifinals. Winners of semifinals enter finals while losers play for third place. Winner of final gets Gold, loser gets Silver and the third place match winner gets Bronze.
