Handball Olympic event in brief

Handball event is held for both men and women in Olympics. There are fifteen players in each team, out of which fourteen can play the match. Seven players inclusive of a goalkeeper are on the ground and the remaining seven are to be used as substitutes. There are twelve teams from different countries that participate in handball events.

In handball game, two sessions of thirty minutes each are played with a break of ten minutes. The team who scores more numbers of goals wins the game. Unlike other events, in handball, unlimited numbers of faults are allowed for defense and attack strategies. In case both teams level in regular time, two sessions of 5 minutes each are given as extra time in elimination stages. If still the game remains undecided, penalty shootout decides the winner.

The twelve competing teams are divided into two groups of six teams each. Teams play against each other in the same group in round robin format. Two points are given for win and one point for a draw. Top four teams of each group advance to quarterfinal stage. From quarterfinal onwards, it is an elimination stage. Whoever wins in quarterfinal enters into semi final. Losing semifinalists play for bronze medal while winning semifinalists play for gold. Matches are also played for other positions from 5th to 12th.
