Jeu de Paume : The Olympic Sport Nobody Knows About
Jeu de Paume. When you hear this phrase, you think it is just some French term that doesnߵt mean anything special. If you understand French, you will know that this means “Game of the Palm,”. Believe it or not this was a well known sport in 1908. Jeu de paume is an Olympic event that only occurred in the first Olympic Games of 1908. This game is also referred to as “real tennis” in the United Kingdom and its only gold medal was won by American, Jay Gould II. His father had a special court built just for him to practice this sport, which explains his mastery of it. Other consecutive medals in this event were won by Great Britain. The best way to describe this sport: Imagine the game of squash, but with using your hands instead of a racquet.
In the Paris Olympics of 1900, this sport was demonstrated outdoors which is why it was called longue paume. Many today do not know of this sport, nor even care whether or not is reinstituted as an Olympic event. As is obvious with its French name, this jeu de paume originated in France and is still played in that country in the northern French region.
