Ippon is the term in Judo that is achieved by throwing the opponent on back with defined force, control and speed or holding the opponent on ground continuously for 25 seconds. Ippon is given the perfect 10 score. Other terms are Waza-ari for 7 points, Yuko for 5 points and Koka for 3 points based on the number of elements missing from that of Ippon quality. Similar to positive scores, there are penalties namely hansoku for 10 points, keikoku for 7 points, chui for 5 points and shido for 3 points.

When 4 competitors are left, they are the semifinalists and the winner of semifinals move to finals to fight for Gold. Losing semifinalists compete with two lucky judokas who lost to semifinalists in the preliminary stages and winner of these two matches, are awarded bronze medals.
