Karate is Still Not an Olympic Event?
Karate is still not an Olympic event despite being presented before the Olympic
committee in 2005 and 2009. Since it did not win a majority vote, Olympic
status still seems to have alluded this multicultural and popular sport.
It has been said that over 23 million people practice this sport worldwide; however, that has not persuaded Olympic officials from making it an Olympic sport.
Karate is not only a mentally demanding sport, it is also physically demanding
which would make it Olympic worthy for all that the Olympics stands for - strength. Many still see karate as a "street fight" which would not qualify it as Olympic worthy. Others have argued that if boxing can become an Olympic sport, why can't karate? Karate is a relatively new sport - known to have started in the 19th century. With this known fact, it may take it a while to become a well established sport in the minds of many. Patiently waiting for it to come an Olympic sport is difficult for some. Since it passed the Olympic committee vote by more than half, it may still have a chance to pass 2/3 vote the next time. Some have said
that they will not give up and petition again in 2013.
