Short and Long Track Speed Skating Olympic Event

Speed skating made its first Olympics presence in 1924. It started with all men event but later women were allowed from 1960 onwards. There are broadly two categories of Speed Skating events in Olympics, Long Track and Short Track. Thrilling Short Track events entered Olympics from 1992 onwards.

Long track speed skating is traditional where both speed and endurance counts. There are total of ten events held in long track, four events each in 500m, 1000m, 1500m and 5000m for men and women, one event of 3000m for women and one of 10000m for Men. In Short track events, participants race at full speed through curves on an oval track and can spill and even bump each other. There are eight short tracking events in Olympics, three events each in 500m, 1000m and 1500m for both men and women, one relay event for women for 3000m and one relay event for men for 5000m.

Competition is spread in heats and finals. In some events, there are four skaters in each heat on track while in other events, there are six skaters. In relay events that involve lot of strategy, there are four skaters in each team running one by one but there is no baton handover but pushing the next teammate to run. Whoever wins the final run, wins Gold.
