Table Tennis - A Stimulating Olympic Event

Table Tennis (TT) affectionately known as Ping Pong is a game of two or four players hitting a ball back and forth to each other on a table which gets divided by a net. The Chinese have been the dominant nation in Table Tennis game since 1950.

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was established in 1926. The Table Tennis game is controlled by this federation. At the end of 2000, ITTF made several changes in Table Tennis. The size of the ball gets increased from 38 mm to 40 mm. Due to increase in ball size, the game play was slowed which makes the audience to follow the ball with ease. The game points get lowered from 21 points to 11.

Table Tennis game gets included in the Olympic sports since 1988 in Seoul, Korea. This game includes four events namely men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles. The mixed doubles event is not included in Olympics, but the event gets played in world championships. In Beijing Olympics 2008, the doubles event has been replaced by the team events. Beijing was the first to introduce Olympic team event in Table Tennis. In team event, both men and women's team contains three players from each country.

In Olympics, only two players were directly selected from each country. The top 16 seeded players get allowed to play directly and the remaining athletes compete in a knock-out tournament to determine which players will occupy the next 16 spots. Single matches are played in best of seven games scenario. In the first stage, four teams compete with the winners of knock-out tournament. The winners will compete until two teams set place for Gold and Silver.

During serve, the ball must be thrown at least 16 cm from net height and it will be visible to the receiver. If a serve is doubtful to umpire he will warn the player. When the serve is illegal, the umpire will award point to the opponent. It is legal to hit the ball with fingers holding the racket. The player is not allowed to use his free hand at any circumstances during the game. If score becomes 10 all (each player gets 10 points in case), then both players will only serve once during his serve time until the game is won. A time-out of one minute is allowed during a match. The rest period will be one minute between games. During rest period, the racket has to be left on the table.

The rules used in Olympic Table Tennis events are the standard international rules set by ITTF. The format of this competition was proposed by the ITTF and approved by the Olympic administration.
