There used to be Roque Olympic event

Roque event has been played in Olympic Games only once. It was in St. Louis Olympics in 1904. Since the participation was not good enough, it was discontinued and has not appeared thereafter. There is not even a chance for its reappearance in near future. In order to understand why it was discontinued, we need to look how game is played and what happened in 1904.

Roque is played like the game of Croquet, the difference being the surface that is harder, made of clay or sand. Even the name of game is derived from Croquet by removing the first and last letter of word “croquet”. Other difference in Roque is use of permanent boundary and permanent wickets, called arches, on the court. Roque is played in innings where players smack the ball and get it via wickets.

In 1904 Olympics, USA was the only participating nation in Roque who fielded its four players to compete. Total of twelve games were played in 2-timed round robin format i.e. every player played against each other twice. On the basis of number of wins, Charles Jacobus was awarded Gold, Smith was awarded Silver and Charles Brown was awarded Bronze. With just one nation participation, it was a home affair and lost the competitive interest completely.
