Mining Cryptocurrency with a Netbook
Being new to mining cryptocurrency, I wanted to see what a netbook can do. In theory, a bunch of netbooks should be able to match a strong computer, right?
In my test, I simply used the very original netbook--one with the Intel Atom N270 running at 1.6 GHz. It has a Mobile Intel 945 integrated graphics chip. Obviously, we won't be able to mine with the integrated graphics card. So we will be mining with the CPU.
In this case, I set up the netbook to mine in a Coino pool. The actual coin doesn't matter, as I have found that the hash rate is not effected by the coin (unless it is some non-standard coin). The cpuminer runs with no options, other than the stratum URL and the miner name/password. Following is the result:
[2014-03-03 15:12:21] 2 miner threads started, using 'scrypt' algorithm.
[2014-03-03 15:12:21] Binding thread 0 to cpu 0
[2014-03-03 15:12:21] Binding thread 1 to cpu 1
[2014-03-03 15:12:22] Stratum detected new block
[2014-03-03 15:12:26] thread 1: 4096 hashes, 1.20 khash/s
[2014-03-03 15:12:26] thread 0: 4096 hashes, 1.20 khash/s
[2014-03-03 15:12:42] Stratum detected new block
[2014-03-03 15:12:42] thread 0: 20100 hashes, 1.22 khash/s
[2014-03-03 15:12:42] thread 1: 19732 hashes, 1.20 khash/s
[2014-03-03 15:12:47] Stratum detected new block
[2014-03-03 15:12:47] thread 0: 5960 hashes, 1.20 khash/s
[2014-03-03 15:12:47] thread 1: 6092 hashes, 1.23 khash/s
I ran it for a while. About a quarter of the day. It never found a share. Quote from "Doge House" pool:
"If you are doing less than 10kh mining will not work. Please dont try to mine with a hashrate lower than 10kh."
Looks like that is what is happening here. 2.5 khash/s from a netbook just won't cut it. It won't matter if you have 100 netbooks pumping out 250 khash/s. None of them will succeed, meaning you won't find any shares. The only way a farm of netbooks will work is if you have a specialized mining software that can distribute the same work among the 100 netbooks.
